Breast Augmentation FAQ

Although one of the most consistently popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed today, it’s perfectly normal to still have questions about your breast augmentation.

At Chicago Breast & Body Aesthetics, cosmetic surgeon Dr. Dr. Anh-Tuan Truong will take the time to answer any concerns you might have so you can feel positive about moving forward with breast enhancement surgery. Some of our patients’ most frequently asked questions are listed below, but please don’t hesitate to contact us for more information.

Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation?

If you feel sensitive about the size of your breasts and have always wanted a curvier figure, you could be a good candidate for breast augmentation. Breast implants can also be used to improve asymmetry between breasts, or restore lost volume after pregnancy and nursing. With the help of a physical evaluation, Dr. Truong can explain more about the results you’re likely to see from breast enlargement.

How do I know which size implants to choose?

The perfect breast implant size is different for every woman, and depends on your anatomy, personal preferences and appearance goals. Some women prefer a natural-looking, subtly enhanced result, while others want a more dramatic figure. A lot of women bring pictures of their “dream look” to their consultation, which can be a great starting point for talking about your goals with Dr. Truong.

Which is better: saline or silicone implants?

There’s no answer as to which type of breast implant is ‘better,’ but only which implant type is better for you. Currently, silicone breast implants are the more popular choice, as many patients and surgeons alike feel that breast augmentation results look more natural when performed using silicone. However, in the right candidate, saline implants can certainly deliver a beautiful result as well. Like implant size, the choice of implant type really comes down to a number of different factors, including your personal preference.

How long will my surgery take?

Typically, breast augmentation only takes Dr. Truong an hour or two to perform, without including pre-surgery prep time or recovery. Since the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, you can expect to go home the same day as your surgery.

What should I expect during recovery?

It’s important to take it easy the first few days after your breast augmentation and give your body time to rest. Although breast enlargement is a cosmetic procedure, it’s still a surgery, and your body needs to focus on healing. Your breasts might feel tight and swollen at first, but pain medication (over-the-counter or prescription) can help, as can using ice packs or bags of frozen veggies placed on the breasts for short periods. You should be back to your daily routine in about a week or so, as long as you continue avoiding vigorous activity.

Will I have scars?

Every incision will leave a scar behind, and breast augmentation surgery is no exception. Dr. Truong makes every effort to place incisions as unobtrusively as possible for a beautiful final result. Most often, incisions are hidden in curve of the pigmented skin around the nipple (periareolar incision) or in the natural crease below the breast (inframammary incision).

How long until I see my results?

Seeing your final results after breast augmentation takes several weeks to a few months or more. The tissue around the implants stays tight at first, then slowly relaxes over time to let the implants drop and settle into their natural position. By about 6 months after surgery, you should have a good idea of your new look.
